Melvin's Mile to File!

On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, Melvin Carter marched from Ward 1 to City Hall, accompanied by a group of over 40 supporters, to file for City Council in the ward. This journey was symbolic of Carter’s mission—to empower people to get involved in their communities.

"This whole campaign is about bringing the voice of ward one residents to City Hall, so it's fitting – and humbling – that you all have chosen to make this walk with me today," Carter told the enthusiastic crowd. "I'm told that this is the first time a City Council candidate has ever been joined by this many people when filing for office, We're demonstrating the power of the people when we work together and the true spirit of our campaign, AS ONE, WE WIN!"

Bikes, Strollers and Sneakers all moved toward downtown. Beginning at St. Paul College, the group marched downtown to the cheers of "As One We Win” and rousing honks from passersby.  With a quick stop to get all 40 through security, Melvin, with his wife Alecia at his side, told the excited group, "It’s important that we came here together, because it’s not just me signing this paper, it’s all of us in this room and in Ward 1, working together to win this campaign.  We will get the opportunity to work even harder after Election Day winning the truly important wins:  good economic development, safer neighborhoods, and healthy communities.  It's great to have your support; it's even better to know that you share my commitment to work toward these goals. Are ready for me to sign this paper? The crowd cheered and clapped as Melvin signed the papers.

Melvin’s Mile to File, on July 11th is part of Melvin’s pledge for a Clean (air) Campaign.  He's pledged to walk, bike, and bus whenever he can during the campaign. He's set himself a goal of riding 300 miles by bike, 100 miles by bus and 25 miles by foot (including parades and doorknocks) before Election Day.  Yesterday’s mile by over 40 folks gets us that much closer to his goal.  Thanks to all who came out and walked with us!  Hope you didn’t get caught in the rain on the way back.
